Strange and rare characters in Disneyland/DCA. All pics from Guy Selga on twitter.

Pics in order are:

  1. Bowler Hat Guy from Meet The Robinsons
  2. Shan Yu from Mulan
  3. Chef Louis from The Little Mermaid
  4. The flying Tinkerbell from Remember… Dreams Come True
  5. The cast of Emperor’s New Groove
  6. Bokers from Disney’s Bonkers

I’ll never forget the time I had to help Bonkers get offstage in Toontown after a child thought it would be fun to jump on his back and yank back on his ears.

Bonkers was hurt, and this is back before characters all had people with them. I left my mobile drink cart with the ice cream vendor — it was almost empty anyway, but I figured I had a really good explanation if any ODV managers got upset about me abandoning my inventory (and this is back when we were selling 12oz cans for $1.00), and helped Bonkers limp off to the gates by Minnie’s house while leaning on me.

On the way, people kept trying to stop us for pictures, and I had to tell them that Bonkers’ animation was a little off, and we had to touch him up a bit before he’d be ready for more pictures.

By the time we got backstage, one of Bonkers’ managers was just pulling up in a pickup, and Fist Aid was arriving there as well, so somebody called it in.

Bonkers’ neck was hurt, but was OK after some medical attention as far as what I was told. I had to get back to my own job so I couldn’t stick around, although I did have to write out a statement later on what I saw and did (that’s a normal thing that we had to do anytime something out-of-the-ordinary happened so there was a paper trail).

The kid’s little brother was really upset and told security that his older brother did it. I didn’t see the aftermath of that, except to see both kids sitting at the big gates waiting to see if Bonkers would be OK when I came back out to retrieve my soda cart.

Makes me glad that characters have someone with them these days — sometimes people forget that characters have feelings too and can get hurt if you play rough with them.

Grab your tissues, guys, cause you’re not getting away from this video without crying buckets of tears.

I always credit this video as to what first turned me on to the Muppets - outside of my childhood adoration for them. I was surfing youtube looking at random Muppet clips when I stumbled across this video, and by the end of it I was in tears. I then spent the rest of the day looking up everything about Jim, which eventually led to this devotion to all things Jim Henson.

But this video. Christ, this video. There is so much love and heartbreak and wonderfulness found in this video. It’s heart wrenching, yes, but it’s just so beautiful how all of the muppets come together, because that’s what Jim would have wanted. Then when Kermit comes through the door at the end… ugh, I’m not even watching it right now and already I’m tearing up.

Bless you, Jim Henson.

This was one of my favorite specials growing up. We recorded it on vhs and it is probably one of the reasons I love the Muppets. “Just One Person” is one of my favorite songs. Time to go cry now…
